Please read this Adoption page in its entirety. It states our policies for adoption.
Contract/Purchase Agreement:
We will require a contract/purchase agreement to be signed. We do this to not
only protect the puppy but, to protect the buyer and seller as well. We
do ask that you read this page in its entirety as it states our policies. If
you can accept our terms, we then ask that you complete an Adoption Application
and return it to us.
Application:
We will only place our puppies in approved homes as pet ownership is
huge responsibility that must be carefully considered and then committed
to for the life of the pet. It is a commitment that will be in your
life for anywhere from 12 to 15 years. We recommend first time pet owners
do their research and not buy a dog based on impulse. Please feel free to
share any questions or concerns you may have before buying a new Havanese
puppy. We take great pride in the pets we raise, and we do know that happy,
healthy puppies result in happy satisfied pet owners.
We DO NOT want our puppies placed in an environment
where they will be shaved, placed in a cage, and bred several times
a year. To ensure that our puppies are placed in loving homes as
pets we ask that you call us with any questions, and then complete our Adoption
Application and return it to us via e-mail. You may feel that this is somewhat
an inconvenience or too personal but, we like to know a bit about the potential
adoptive families. After
we receive the application it will be reviewed, we will also need to speak
to you more by phone, and if you are accepted you will have the option of placing
a deposit to be put on our selection list. Once
on our selection or wait list, you'll be able to choose your puppy from the
litter around 6 to 7 weeks, according to your position on the selection
list. Approval or Disapproval of an application is solely at our discretion. The
buyer(s) must be the person(s) who will own the puppy. We will not
sell a puppy to pet stores, buyer(s) for third parties or for
the purpose of a gift to an unsuspecting third party.
Please complete the application and e-mail it to us at: nancyd@me.com.First
copy and paste the questionaire into a new e-mail message. Then answer the
questions and send.
Or you can print out the application and manually fill it out and
mail it to the address at the bottom of the form. Also, a fax can be received
with prior arrangements, just send us an email or call to let us know you wish to
send a fax.
Deposits:
After the puppies are born, and if you know that you definitely wish to adopt a puppy, and your Adoption
Application has been approved, we will accept a deposit from you. A non-refundable
deposit of $500 will secure your place in the selection list for a puppy in
the litter. You will then be placed on the selection list. The order of
the selection list is determined by the order that we receive the deposits.
If your deposit is first, you will be first in line to choose.Any
remaining balance will be due when your Puppy is picked up. Please
keep in mind the time for a check to clear, etc. as stated in the Payment
section below. So cash on delivery is best. It's good to keep in mind that the average litter size is only 2 to 3 puppies. So if you are sure you want one, get your deposit in as soon as they are born.
Selection:
Once you have a deposit accepted by us you will be allowed to select
your puppy at about the time the puppy reachs 6 weeks of
age. Selections will be offered in the order of the selection list-- please
see 'Deposits' above for more information. After you have
chosen your puppy, you will not be allowed to 'change your mind' unless approved
by us. We reserve the right to withhold any puppy from the selection list
for personal reasons. Sometimes
we just can't bear to part with a puppy or two!
Pricing:
The price for each puppy is $2,500.
This price includes the puppy, with limited AKC registration rights (meaning
it is sold as a pet, not for breeding), a generous Puppy Pack of supplies (see below), and your
puppy will be up to date with all recommended vaccinations and medical treatments
appropriate for their age. Any
delivery costs will be additional.
You truly get what you pay for. We are not the lowest or the highest priced, but we do take
the time, and supply the care and devotion to rear the very best puppy for
your family.
Please understand this is a precious and rare breed and you should expect to
pay between $2,000-$5,000 for a true AKC Havanese. Also, we breed for light color and small size. If the price elsewhere seems
too good to be true, chances are it is not a true Havanese, or it is from a
puppy mill where the mother dog is shaved and the mother and puppies are kept
in a cage in the basement or garage, and not properly socialized, or somewhere
along the line the breeder has skipped precious care, time, and health precautions
which will cost your family dearly both emotionally and monetarily down the
road. You may also end up with a 35 pound dog instead of the expected 8-12 pound dog.
Payment:
All payments must be paid in full and funds cleared
as described below prior to delivery of your puppy.
We gladly accept the following types of payments:
Cash - with no waiting period.
Cashier's Check
or Personal Check - 15 day waiting
period for funds to clear.
Money Order - 10 day waiting period for funds to clear.
Delivery:
Delivery of your puppy will be sometime around 8 weeks of age.
It is best to pick up your puppy in person by driving to our home in Carmel, IN.
We could also meet you at the Indianapolis International Airport, if you wish
to fly in and carry your puppy home in the cabin with you. The puppy would stay in a canvas puppy carrier under the seat in front of you. We will not ship our puppies
via the airlines as cargo. Finally, we could possibly
arrange delivery to your home (fees apply) depending on your location.
Naming:
For convenience, we will name the puppies. However, after you
have choosen your puppy, we will refer to your puppy by the name you have chosen.
Before:
Before you receive your puppy, we will assist in the birthing of all
the puppies, weigh them daily for the first 2 weeks and every week thereafter to make sure they are growing correctly, and ensure that they get a healthy start in life. They
will be handled daily, gently and lovingly for socialization. We will monitor their growth
daily and give them the necessary medical care. We will ensure that each
puppy receives individual attention as we feel that this is important in
their development and it also gives us the opportunity to evaluate the development
of each puppy. We will nurse the puppies that need that extra attention. We
will raise the puppy in our home, as we don't believe they should be
in the basement or outside in the garage. We will only allow visitors, other than the adoptive families,
after they are about 3 weeks of age, and nobody will be allowed around the
puppy unless they are in good health and, until they are 5 weeks old, also
wash their hands before touching them. Amd, since they will be too young to receive all of their vaccines, we require all visitors to remove their shoes so they do not carry diseases in on their shoes. However, we
do feel that is very important to socialize the puppy with other people after 3 weeks, and they
like the attention. We will begin grooming the puppy as soon as they are
at the appropriate age. We will trim the nails and gently brush them
to introduce them to the brush. We will also begin potty training. We will
not give the puppy to their adoptive families until they are eating puppy
food on their own.
After:
Espect to spend at least 2-3 hours here when picking up your puppy to get tips on feeding, training and generally caring for your precious puppy.
Then, at the appropriate age, we require that you
spay or neuter your puppy.
If for any reason
you can no longer care for your puppy, and cannot find a suitable home that you know the potential owner personally, you must promise to do the right thing and return
the puppy to us so that we can find an appropriate home for the puppy. Please
remember that Havanese do not like to be isolated, and so they would not
do well in a rescue shelter situation. We do not want any of our puppies to
be placed in a shelter. We would prefer to have them in our home until we can find
a suitable loving new home.
Medical:
All medical services will be performed by our veterinarian, or
under the direction of our veterinarian, as we believe these things should
be performed by professionals.
Puppy Pack:
Your Puppy will be given a Puppy Pack with delivery. What's included in the Puppy Pack?
A Welcome Letter and 'Tips' sheets on how to care for your
Puppy. A generous sample of puppy food that he/she is accustomed to eating. A warm cozy blanky and small stuffed animal with Mom's scent to make
your Puppy's transition more comfortable. It will be ones used previously
by Mom and the littermates! A chew toy for your Puppy's chewing needs. Puppy pads for the trip home and for several days afterwards. A medical treatment card showing all the wormings, vaccinations,
and complete medical history of your Puppy. A birth record showing all the statistics of your Puppy.
